One of Ireland’s top medal contenders has reached the knot horse final next Sunday.

Newtownards ’Rhys McClenaghan currently leads the pommel standings, after scoring 15,266 on the first day of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and hopes to win Ireland’s first Olympic medal in gymnastics.

Following this qualifying for the individual eight-man final at the Ariake Gymnastics Center, the gymnast tweeted saying “we’ll be ready.”
